Checking the Computer's Connection with the Gateway (Finding If A Computer Is Onlne)

To check if your computer is properly connected to the Linksys Gateway you will need to perform four steps:Checking the Physical

i.       Checking the Physical Connection to the Gateway
ii.      Checking the Gateway’s LEDs
iii.     Checking the IP Address of the Computer
iv.     Pinging the Gateway

Checking the Physical Connection to the Gateway

Make sure the computer is connected to one of the four Ethernet ports of the Gateway, and the ADSL line should be connected to the Line port.  For further instructions, click here.  After checking the connection between the ADSL line, Gateway, and computer, check the LED’s of the Gateway.

Checking the Gateway's LEDs

Check the LED lights located at the front panel of the gateway.  After checking the LEDs of the gateway, check the computer’s IP Address.

Checking the IP Address of the Computer

The IP Address of the computer is another indication that the computer is properly connected to the Gateway.  To know how to check your computer’s IP address, click here.  After checking the computer’s IP Address, ping the Gateway.

Pinging the Gateway 

A ping test helps trace the communication between the computer and the Gateway.  The computer sends packets to the Gateway and in return, the Gateway sends out replies to validate the connection.

NOTE:  In this example, the Gateway’s IP Address is 192.168.1.1.

Step 1:Click the  button.  On the Search field, type “cmd” then press [Enter].

Step 2:On the command prompt window, type “ping 198.162.1.1” and press [Enter].

Step 3:Check the ping statistics.  You should get Packets: Sent =4, Received =4, Lost = 0 (0% loss).

NOTE:  If your ping statistics does not have Packets: Sent =4, Received =4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), click here.

Windows 2000 / XP

Step 1:Click Start > Run. 

Step 2:
In the Run window, enter “cmd” in the Open field, then click OK. 

                           

Step 3:   
In the MS DOS Prompt window, enter “ping 192.168.1.1” and press [Enter].

Step 4:
Check the ping statistics.  You should get Packets: Sent =4, Received =4, Lost = 0 (0% loss).
